If you have shopped for a hydrating serum in the last year, you have met the new contender. Polyglutamic acid vs hyaluronic acid is the comparison currently running through every K-beauty ingredient list, usually with a headline claim attached: polyglutamic acid holds five thousand times its weight in water, hyaluronic acid only a thousand. Case closed, apparently.
It is not that simple, and the real answer is more useful than the marketing one. These two hydrators work at different depths, behave differently in different weather, and — this is the part almost nobody mentions — one of them actively protects the other. Here is what polyglutamic acid actually does, where hyaluronic acid still wins, and how to layer them so your skin holds water instead of losing it.
Hyaluronic acid binds water inside the upper layers of skin; polyglutamic acid — a fermented polymer from Bacillus subtilis — holds water at the surface in a light, flexible film and inhibits hyaluronidase, the enzyme that breaks down your skin's own hyaluronic acid. What polyglutamic acid actually is (and why it isn't an acid)
Polyglutamic acid is not an exfoliating acid. It has nothing in common with glycolic or salicylic acid, and it will not resurface anything. It is a polymer — a long chain built from repeating units of glutamic acid, an amino acid — produced by fermenting Bacillus subtilis. If that bacterium sounds familiar, it is the one behind natto, the Japanese fermented soybean dish famous for its stringy, viscous texture. That stringiness is polyglutamic acid.
Which places it squarely in K-beauty's comfort zone. Fermentation has been a Korean formulation signature for years, and 2026's hydration category has leaned hard into it — the same logic that put galactomyces and rice ferment on your shelf. On an ingredient list it usually appears as polyglutamic acid or sodium polyglutamate.
The molecule is large. Much larger than the low-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid fragments engineered to slip between corneocytes. That size is often framed as a weakness — it cannot penetrate — but it is precisely where its usefulness comes from. A large polymer stays on the surface and dries down into a thin, breathable, slightly flexible film that holds water against the skin instead of letting it evaporate. It is closer to a humectant and a soft occlusive in one step than to a classic serum active.
Two further things it does that hyaluronic acid does not:
- It inhibits hyaluronidase. Hyaluronidase is the enzyme that continually breaks down the hyaluronic acid your skin makes for itself. Slowing it down means your own reserves last a little longer — an indirect benefit that lab work suggests is stronger with lower-molecular-weight polyglutamic acid.
- It supports natural moisturising factor (NMF). Research points to polyglutamic acid encouraging the skin's own pool of NMF — the amino acids, urea and PCA that keep the outer layer supple. That is a hydration mechanism your skin owns, rather than one you reapply.

What hyaluronic acid still does better
Hyaluronic acid did not become the default hydrator by accident. It is native to human skin — a substantial share of the body's hyaluronic acid sits in the dermis, where it holds the tissue plump and hydrated. Topically, the point of engineering it into different molecular weights is depth: small fragments reach into the upper epidermis and bind water where polyglutamic acid simply cannot go.
That matters for the look people actually want. Surface film gives you immediate smoothness and light-bounce; water bound within the upper layers gives you the fuller, less crepey quality that reads as genuinely hydrated skin rather than glossed skin. The dry-air problem nobody puts on the box
Here is the piece of hydration science that changes how you use both ingredients. A humectant does one thing: it attracts water. It does not decide where that water comes from.
When the air around you is humid, a humectant can pull moisture from the atmosphere. When it is dry — an air-conditioned office in August, a car with the vents on full, a plane cabin, a heated flat in midwinter — there is very little atmospheric water available, so it draws instead from the moisture already in your skin. Pull that water to the surface with nothing sealing it there, and dry air simply evaporates it away. The net result can be higher transepidermal water loss than if you had done nothing, which is exactly the "I use hyaluronic acid and my skin still feels tight" complaint.
Two fixes, both boring, both effective:
- Apply to damp skin. Do not towel dry completely. That residual film of water is what the humectant binds to first.

Polyglutamic acid is more forgiving here than hyaluronic acid, because its film does part of the sealing job itself. Forgiving is not the same as sufficient. In genuinely dry air, both still want a cream on top.
How to layer them (the order that actually matters)
The principle behind Korean layering order is thin to thick, small molecule to large. Applied to hydrators that gives you a clean, unambiguous sequence:
- Cleanse, and stop before your skin is dry. Slightly damp is the target.
- Hydrating toner or essence. Watery, glycerin-rich, gets the first layer of water in.
- Hyaluronic acid serum or ampoule. The smaller molecules go first, while there is still room for them to work.
- Polyglutamic acid. Over the top, where its film can hold everything beneath it in place.
- Moisturiser or sleeping mask. The seal. Non-negotiable in dry conditions.
Reverse steps 3 and 4 and you have laid a film down before the thing that was supposed to get underneath it. Nothing dramatic will happen — you will simply get less out of the serum you paid for. One caveat worth stating: layering more hydrators is not the same as fixing dehydration. If water keeps escaping because the barrier itself is compromised, no amount of humectant will hold. So which one should you actually buy?
If you are choosing between them rather than combining them, the honest split looks like this:
- Reach for hyaluronic acid if your skin reads flat and crepey rather than tight, if you live somewhere humid, or if you want the most evidence-backed, best-priced option. It is the sensible default.
- Reach for polyglutamic acid if you spend your days in air conditioning or dry heat, if your hydration seems to vanish by mid-afternoon, if you wear makeup and want a smoother canvas, or if hyaluronic acid alone has left your skin feeling tight.
