AHA vs BHA vs PHA: Which Exfoliant Does Your Skin Actually Need?

Walk down any K-beauty aisle and the letters start stacking up: AHA toners, BHA serums, PHA mists, and a growing crowd of “gentle daily acid” formulas promising glass skin by Friday. The three families get lumped together as “chemical exfoliants,” which is technically true and practically useless — because AHA vs BHA vs PHA isn't a strength ranking. It's a question of where each acid can physically go. Pick by depth and solubility and acids become the most reliable glow step in your routine; pick by “strongest available” and you end up in the over-exfoliated club that half of 2026's barrier-repair content exists to rescue.

The short answer.

AHAs (glycolic, lactic, mandelic) are water-soluble and resurface the skin's top layer — best for dullness, rough texture, and uneven tone. BHA (salicylic acid) is oil-soluble, the only one that follows sebum into the pore — best for blackheads, congestion, and oily skin. PHAs (gluconolactone, lactobionic) have the largest molecules, work slowest and shallowest, and hydrate while they exfoliate — best for sensitive or barrier-compromised skin. Match the acid to the address, not the strength.

Water or oil: the split that decides everything

Every exfoliating acid does the same basic job — it loosens the bonds holding dead cells to the surface so they shed on schedule instead of piling up. What separates the families is chemistry you can actually feel: solubility and molecule size decide where the acid works.

AHAs dissolve in water, so they stay where the water is — the damp, dead top layer of your skin. Salicylic acid dissolves in oil, so it can travel where oil goes: down into the pore lining, where blackheads and congestion actually live. PHAs are water-soluble like AHAs but built from much larger molecules, so they penetrate slowly and shallowly, exfoliating the very surface almost without commotion. AHAs: the resurfacers

Alpha-hydroxy acids are the classic glow acids, and the family runs from assertive to genuinely gentle. Glycolic, derived originally from sugarcane, has the smallest molecule in skincare's acid cabinet — it penetrates fastest and delivers the most visible resurfacing, and for exactly that reason it's the easiest to overdo. Lactic acid is the K-beauty favourite: a bigger molecule that works the dead-cell layer more politely, and — unusually for an exfoliant — it's also a humectant, drawing water into the skin as it works. Mandelic acid, from bitter almonds, is the AHA most dermatologists suggest for deeper skin tones: its large molecule works so gradually that it smooths texture with a much lower chance of the temporary post-inflammatory marks that faster acids can trigger on melanin-rich skin.

What AHAs share: they brighten, they soften the look of rough texture and uneven tone over weeks, and they make sunscreen mandatory — a resurfaced top layer scatters less UV, so daily SPF is part of the deal.

BHA: the pore specialist

Salicylic acid is a category of one. Being oil-soluble, it does something no AHA or PHA can: it dissolves through sebum and works inside the pore itself, loosening the plugs of oil and dead cells that read as blackheads and bumpy congestion. It's also naturally calming to the skin around blemishes — it's chemically related to aspirin — which is why a well-formulated BHA can decongest without the angry redness people expect from acne products.

The catch is drying power. BHA in a stripping alcohol base, used daily, is how oily skin ends up both greasy and flaky at once. PHA: exfoliation for skin that hates exfoliation

Polyhydroxy acids are the quiet winners of the last two years, and 2026's barrier-first mood suits them perfectly. Gluconolactone and lactobionic acid carry the largest molecules of any exfoliating acid, so they work the outermost surface slowly, with a fraction of the sting potential. They're also humectants and mild antioxidants — they pull water into the skin while they lift dead cells off it, which is close to a contradiction in terms for an exfoliant.

PHAs are the answer when the honest answer to “which acid should I use?” is “your skin isn't ready for acids yet.” Reactive skin, rosacea-prone skin, skin mid-way through retinoid adjustment, or skin recovering from the over-exfoliation era — this is their audience. They're also the friendliest acid to alternate with a retinoid, softening the dryness of the adjustment weeks instead of adding to it.

Which acid for your skin type

Dry or dull skin wants lactic acid — resurfacing plus a humectant assist, two to three evenings a week, followed by a proper moisturiser. Oily and congested skin wants BHA for the pores, with the discipline to keep it to a few nights a week. Sensitive or redness-prone skin wants a PHA, or a low-strength buffered lactic formula, and nothing else until the skin proves it's comfortable. Combination skin can zone it — BHA where the oil is, AHA or PHA everywhere else — or simply alternate nights.

Can I use AHA and BHA together?

You can, but most skin doesn't need both on the same night. A simpler pattern is zoning (BHA on an oily T-zone, AHA elsewhere) or alternating nights. If you're new to acids, master one before adding a second — stacking exfoliants is the fastest route to a damaged barrier.

How often should I exfoliate with an acid?

Start with once or twice a week and let your skin vote. A gentle lactic AHA or a PHA can work up to every other night for resilient skin; stronger glycolic formulas usually stay at one to two nights a week. Tightness, stinging, or a shiny-but-rough texture means cut the frequency, not push through.

Which exfoliating acid is best for sensitive skin?

PHAs (gluconolactone or lactobionic acid) are the gentlest option because their large molecules stay near the surface, and lactic acid is the gentlest of the mainstream AHAs. Many sensitive-skin routines in Korea pair a low-strength acid with a calming cica step instead of reaching for a stronger acid.

Do I have to stop retinol to use an acid?

No, but don't layer them on the same night while you're adjusting. Alternate — acid one night, retinoid another, recovery nights in between. PHAs are the friendliest acid to run alongside a retinoid because they exfoliate gently and pull water into the skin at the same time.

Is purging real with exfoliating acids?

Yes, within limits. Acids that speed cell turnover can push brewing congestion to the surface for two to four weeks, mostly where you normally break out. New breakouts in new places, or irritation with redness and stinging, isn't purging — it's your skin objecting, and the product or frequency needs to change.

Do chemical exfoliants make skin more sun-sensitive?
